Gracie’s story
Gracie has been a young carer in Surrey, since she was five years old.
She helps care for her older sister, who is 15 and has autism, ADHD and depression.
Her sister can find school and friendships really difficult and often experiences meltdowns. When things feel overwhelming, Gracie is someone she trusts and talks to. Gracie will try to help her sister as best she can with her Mum’s support.
“I try to help and tell Mum when I can. She talks to me because I’m easy going and she trusts me.”
Ups and downs
Being a young carer isn’t always easy. The hardest part for Gracie is the worry. “I worry about my sister.”
But there are positives too. Helping her sister and seeing her happier means a lot. “I can help her and make her happy.”
Gracie gets support from Action for Carers’ young carers service, Surrey Young Carers, and says it gives her a break from the pressures of caring.
“It takes me away from the stress.”
Time – and new opportunities
Through Surrey Young Carers, Gracie was able to try new activities and spend time just being herself.
She received some funding to help her take part in something she enjoys and now belongs to a windsurfing club, after first trying paddleboarding with the group.

When asked to describe her caring role in three words, Gracie says: “Challenging, worrying and stressful.”
But when she talks about Surrey Young Carers, her words change completely: “Brilliant, exciting and happy!”
Gracie wants other young carers to know that support is out there.
“You can join fun activities with Surrey Young Carers, meet new people and meet new adults who can support you.”
