We’re a free, independent charity. You choose how much or little support you want. And we’ll never overwhelm you with emails or calls.
What stops people coming forward for help?
People take a while to realise they are carers. People just think they are doing what they should as a parent, child, sibling, grandparent or friend.
- A Carers UK study, found half of all carers (51%) took over a year to recognise their caring role, with over a third (36%) taking over three years to recognise themselves as a carer.
- The All parliamentary Group on Carers Report (Nov 2023) stated that for some young carers it can take up to 10 years to be identified. (For others, it’s even more.) Children are even more likely to be unaware of the concept of ‘being’ a carer.
Some may realise they are carers, but not understand about the wide range of help available. That can be from us, Action for Carers, but also from statutory services, your employer, your school or other settings. There is a lot of support out there, and it can make huge difference.
When you have a child with additional needs, everything is a fight, it takes so much energy and strength. It is overwhelming, and to have someone to offer help, advice, guidance and support, free of charge, to take this weight of your shoulders, is a life saver!
Please come forward for help if you are a carer – and if you’re not, please let anyone you know who is a carer about the support, or maybe put up one of our posters in your workplace. Thank you!
