Meet Shirley
Speaking to ACS felt like a door opening. You made me feel accepted and able to get the support Brian and I needed.
At 80, Shirley cares for her husband Brian, who lives with early-onset dementia and prostate cancer.
As Brian’s needs increased, Shirley found herself taking on more responsibilities whilst navigating unfamiliar systems and difficult decisions.
Like many carers, Shirley was unaware that support was available until a friend encouraged her to contact ACS.
With support from ACS, Shirley accessed Attendance Allowance, obtained a Blue Badge and received emotional support that helped her feel more confident about the future.
“It’s given me strength. I feel like I’m not doing this alone.”

Meet Jack and Charlie
Jack is just 5 years old and helps care for his mum Charlie, who lives with multiple sclerosis.
When asked what people should know about young carers, Jack gave a simple but powerful answer:
Young carers help people they love every day.
Through ACS activities and events, Jack gets the opportunity to make friends, build confidence and, most importantly, simply enjoy being a child.
Charlie explains: “ACS gives Jack somewhere he can simply have fun and be himself. Every single event Jack has attended, he has loved.”
For Charlie, the support provides valuable time to rest and recharge, knowing Jack is safe, happy and enjoying himself.
“Young carers often go through a lot on their own. ACS gives them some much-needed ‘me time’ and the chance to meet other children who understand what life is like.”
