On average, there are at least two young carers in every class. They often face challenges because of their caring role, which means they may fall behind in their work, not meet their potential and even face bullying.
We have developed our Angel Award Scheme with input from young carers who outlined what would help them manage school alongside their caring role. The aim is to recognise schools that are providing real support to their young carers – and encourage all schools to do more.
Life at school or college provides challenges for all young people, but for those who have a caring role at home there are often additional problems that arise in their education. Commonly there are issues with attendance, behaviour, achievement and home-school communication...
We've got lots of support available to schools to help them support young carers. Have a look at some of the useful forms and documents.
You can also speak to one of our Education Advisors who can come to meet with SENCOs or Home School Link Workers, brief staff and deliver assemblies. Find out more about what our Education Advisors do here.
People Like Us is a video based learning resource which explains what a young carer is and what their life is like. It helps teachers and other professionals to identify young carers, and young carers to self-identify, as well as explaining the best ways to help and support young carers.
