# Action for Carers: Action for Carers Surrey supports unpaid family and friend carers aged 5-95, right across Surrey. This includes 121 support, local Hubs, a Helpline, advocacy, workshops, support groups and events – both for information and for carer wellbeing. Their aim is to help unpaid carers feel supported, informed and part of the community. The charity also trains professionals in best practice in carer identification and support. There are also specialist teams for carers aged 5-17, carers in hospitals, and to help carers safely help the person they care for move.

After my uncle’s sudden death, my grandparents moved to the UK to live with my family. My grandparents were not able to take care of themselves alone, so I became one of the carers to help them with day-to-day life. Although, I was more than happy to help, it was a big change to my life and something that I struggled to deal with for a while. At the time, both my grandparents suffered from mobility and health conditions such as arthritis, unstable blood pressure levels, diabetes and so on. They needed someone with everyday necessities, keeping track of medication and helping to clean their room.

He was simply a child that needed special help. In his teens, however, things started to go wrong, and we entered into a horrific time. He suffered awful experiences in residential care - a protracted and extremely difficult time. I had to fight furiously on his behalf and suffered terribly with my mental health. However, now, things are different.

I noticed Mum not talking to other mums and realised I was looking after her. At first it all started gradually, but I was doing things like ironing by the age of eight.

- [Kate’s story](https://www.actionforcarers.org.uk/stories/kates-story/): “When William was six he experienced a three week period of seizures which were so severe we were told they may be an indication of an autoimmune brain disease. Fortunately these were controlled by medication and the episode passed. However in the spring of 2018 the seizures returned and William has experienced them fairly consistently ever since. He has between 6 – 30 epileptic seizures in a 24 hour time frame, the majority of them at night.

I care for my older sister who has epilepsy, and she has to take medication and can be in bed a lot. I often make her food and if she ever looks bored, I'll go into her room with a board game.

I was around the age of 8 when I first found out about Surrey Young Carers. My mother explained it to me saying that children around my age, who go through the troubles I did of helping look after someone in their family, get together and take a time out of being a carer and can be themselves.

She was, now I realise, getting depressed for a long time but we didn’t pick it up until it was full blown manic depression. And to be honest I didn’t really know what that diagnosis meant at that time. And the other diagnosis was bipolar disorder.
